In 1927 former chief pilot Parker Van Zandt gathered investors and leased nearly 800 acres of land to build the first Grand Canyon Airport, officially opened in 1931. Within its first two years of operation, the newly-birthed Scenic Airlines had flown over 100 passengers over the Grand Canyon National Park. A tumultuous future awaited Scenic, however. Several changings of hands along with the repercussions of World War II made the fate of the Grand Canyon air tour company uncertain.
In 1967, Elling B. Halvorson, a construction company owner, was contracted to build the trans-canyon water pipeline through the National Park. With no way to cross from one side of the canyon to the other, Halvorson used Bell helicopters to transport his materials across the canyon gorge. Before long, locals began to ask for rides aboard the helicopters. Halvorson saw an untapped market in the tourist industry. Halvorson's emergent company soon bought Scenic Airlines. By 1976, Scenic had transported over 45,000 passengers.
Today, Scenic Airlines operates a myriad of daily tours out of Las Vegas, Grand Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon West, and Page, Arizona. After 90 years of operation, we still strive to create the most breathtaking aerial sightseeing experiences for our passengers. Join us, the world's longest-running air tour company, in celebrating the honor of nearly a century of service.
